Contention is conflict in which people contend “with anger, one with another.” The speaker said that “he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me,” and called the devil “the father of contention” (3 Nephi 11:29).
The speaker said that it is not his doctrine “to stir up the hearts of men with anger, one against another,” and that such things “should be done away” (3 Nephi 11:30). A commandment required that there be “no contention one with another” and that hearts be “knit together in unity and in love” (Mosiah 18:21).
The Lord said that writings by “the fruit of thy loins” and by “the fruit of the loins of Judah” would grow together for “laying down of contentions” and “establishing peace among the fruit of thy loins” (2 Nephi 3:12).
