Darkness

Darkness is the absence of light. During one night, there was “no darkness in all that night,” and it was light “as though it was mid-day”. The sun rose again in the morning “according to its proper order” (3 Nephi 1:19).

After thunderings, lightnings, storm, tempest, and quakings ceased, “there was darkness upon the face of the land” (3 Nephi 8:19-20). The inhabitants could “feel the vapor of darkness,” and neither candles, torches, nor fire kindled with dry wood gave light (3 Nephi 8:20-21). No sun, moon, or stars were seen, and the darkness lasted three days amid mourning, howling, and weeping (3 Nephi 8:22-23).

The brother of Jared prepared vessels for his people and told the Lord, “there is no light in them”. He asked, “wilt thou suffer that we shall cross this great water in darkness” (Ether 2:22).
