Genealogical Record-Keeping

Genealogical Record-Keeping is the preservation and writing of ancestral genealogies on plates and in records. Nephi said that Laban had “a genealogy of my forefathers,” engraven with the record of the Jews upon plates of brass (1 Nephi 3:3). Lehi found a genealogy of his fathers on the plates of brass and learned that he was “a descendant of Joseph” (1 Nephi 5:14).

Nephi did not give his fathers’ genealogy on the plates he was writing because it was in “the record which has been kept by my father” (1 Nephi 6:1). Jarom wrote by his father Enos’s commandment “that our genealogy may be kept,” and Omni wrote on plates “to preserve our genealogy” (Jarom 1:1; Omni 1:1). Alma said the brass plates held the genealogy of their forefathers “even from the beginning” and were to be handed down from one generation to another (Alma 37:3-4).
