Plural Marriage and Concubinage

Plural Marriage and Concubinage are arrangements involving “many wives and concubines.” The people of Nephi, under the second king, began to indulge in practices like David’s and Solomon’s desire for many wives and concubines (Jacob 1:15). The Lord said that David and Solomon’s many wives and concubines were “abominable before me” (Jacob 2:24).

Jacob instructed that no man should have “save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none” (Jacob 2:27). He said the Lamanites had kept the commandment to have one wife, no concubines, and no whoredoms (Jacob 3:5). A man who did not keep God’s commandments had many wives and concubines and caused his people to commit sin (Mosiah 11:2).
