Temples are buildings constructed and used as places where people gathered to hear religious teaching. Nephi “did build a temple” after the manner of Solomon’s temple, though it was not built with as many precious things because they were unavailable in the land; its construction was like Solomon’s temple (2 Nephi 5:16). Jacob taught in the temple after obtaining his errand from the Lord, and he went there to declare “the word of God” (Jacob 1:17; Jacob 2:2).
King Benjamin’s people gathered at the temple to hear him speak, pitching family tents around it with their doors facing the temple (Mosiah 2:1; Mosiah 2:5-6). Because the multitude could not fit within its walls, Benjamin caused a tower to be erected so “his people might hear the words which he should speak” (Mosiah 2:7). A great multitude later gathered around the temple in the land Bountiful (3 Nephi 11:1).
