Quakings and rending of the earth in prophetic warning and catastrophe

Earthquakes

Earthquakes are “quakings of the earth” that accompany destruction and upheaval (3 Nephi 8:19). Nephi heard “thunderings, and earthquakes, and all manner of tumultuous noises” and saw rocks rent, mountains broken, plains disrupted, and cities falling through quaking (1 Nephi 12:4).

Nephi also prophesied “thunderings, and lightnings, and earthquakes, and all manner of destructions” among the wicked (2 Nephi 26:6). Before the three days of darkness, the thunder, lightning, storm, tempest, and quakings “did last for about the space of three hours” (3 Nephi 8:19).

A latter-day warning includes “wars, rumors of wars, and earthquakes in divers places,” together with great pollutions and other calamities (Mormon 8:30).
